A Taste of Heaven
An incredible Jerusalem family brings the beauty of Shabbat to the world.
by Sara Yoheved Rigler
One Shabbat a young American student from the Hebrew University was among the 100 guests who crowded into the modest Jerusalem apartment of Rabbi Mordechai and Henny Machlis. This student, wearing a nose ring and an eyebrow ring, was determined to undermine every word of Torah Rabbi Machlis tried to share with his guests. Every time Rabbi Machlis spoke, the student would yell out, "That's stupid!" or "That's archaic!" or he would laugh out loud. (full article)

Keeping Shabbos in Hollywood
I thought they said, "You'll never work in this town again!" only in old movies.
by David Sacks
Shortly after I first started keeping Shabbos, I got my first job as a staff writer on a sit-com. It was the 99th rated show out of 99 in prime time. Not that this has anything to do with the story, I've just always thought that was cool.
There wasn't much to do the first week, and it was August when the sun sets relatively late, so we finished work before there was any conflict. The second week was different. Friday rolled around and we were finishing just in time for me to be able to make it home for candle lighting. I lived close to the studio, so as long as we wrapped it up quickly, I'd make it home by the skin of my teeth. (full article)

Shabbos: The Real Existance
Excerpt from Living Inspired
by Rabbi Dr. Akiva Tatz
Shabbos is central to Torah and Jewish living. It must reflect the fundamental pattern we are studying. The week begins and ends with Shabbos - an inspired end to the week. From the holy to the ordinary to the holy again.
What is the message of this weekly cycle? What energies are being manifest in it that we should be using, riding? Why do we need a Shabbos every week whereas other mo’adim (festivals) occur only yearly? There must be a most essential lesson for the neshama (soul) in Shabbos which necessitates such close repetition. (full article)
