Great Kiruv Stories
Rabbi Noah Weinberg

Besides hearing some of the most amazing real-life stories of people returning to Judaism, laugh and marvel along as Rabbi Weinberg gets to the very source of many fundamental kiruv principles. Included are classic encounters like 'The 95-year-old Baalas Teshuva', 'An Atheist Uncle', and 'The Jewish Divinity Student'.

RMS_cover_3D.jpgAveilus, Part I

When someone loses someone close to them – what can you do?

Realize first of all that these times are the times in life that people need the most support.
It is also a time when they are thinking about the purpose of life and therefore may be more open.

1. Care:

  • Pay a Shiva call if possible. If out of distance, call during or even after the Shiva.
  • Even visiting many times can make a real impact.
  • Offer to help in any way.
  • Ask them about the deceased – what was special? What did they admire?
  • Be there emotionally for them even after the Shiva.
  • Arrange for kaddish to be said (at the Western Wall - www.aish.com/kaddish)

2. Give meaningful gifts:

  • The Jewish approach to mourning is helpful. Give them the aish.com article: http://www.aish.com/literacy/lifecycle/The_Stages_of_Jewish_Mourning.asp
  • Lori Palatnik's book: Remember My Soul: A Path of Reflection, Inspiration and Personal Growth - how to process the loss of family, which has great Torah wisdom
  • There are many other books that are related to the soul and the after-life, e.g. Soul Searching by Astor; Powers of the Soul by Tom Meyer, If You were G-d by Aryeh Kaplan
