Aveilus, Part II
When someone loses someone close to them – what can you do?
Realize first of all that these times are the times in life that people need the most support. It is also a time when they are thinking about the purpose of life and therefore may be more open.
Last week, we discussed the first two ideas. Here are the next three:
3) Learn together:
-
Offer to learn about kaddish together with them
-
Explain to them that the soul lives on after death – this can be consoling.
-
-
This can lead to very valuable conversation and can serve as a pesach to their developing a desire to know and learn more.
4) Introduce the concept of mitzvos
-
Explain that the soul can be affected in shamayim. This is why we:
1) Learn in the merit of the deceased
2) Honour of parents continues after the person is deceased. The merits of the children affect the position of the soul in heaven; therefore people learn and give charity.
-
You can ask them if they would like to learn together as a merit. Then discuss what.
E.g. Pirkei Avos – mishnah is osios of neshamah – therefore a great merit
-
You can discuss what mitzvah they might relate to taking on.
E.g. The Shema – you can learn it together, or Shmiras haloshon, (learn together)
5) Develop your own sensitivity at times of loss:
Here are a couple of articles to help:
